BWilson,
Don't kick me out of my home. I love this place. I have drove past this building every day since I moved to Raleigh. It was a dream to live in this building.

JeffS,
So what are you asking for? For your landlord to fix the building, or for the city to overlook the violations?

Karl Larson,

Devin McKim,

Adrienne Lockhart,

Jerone Ferrer,

Dillon K,
the wilmont is my home, this place rocks... raleigh doesn't need anymore expensive condos, especially in the economy

Miles Holst,
I've lived at the Wilmont for three years. It is more than just my home, it is part of my way of life, and I would like nothing more than to continue to live there for the rest of my time in Raleigh. Hopefully this can be the case.

Lori,
I've always dreamed of living in the Wilmont when I graduate from college and if it's gone, then I'll probably end up moving back home until I can find a place that feels like home.

John Morris,

Chad Evans,

Dana Trentlage,

xxxxxxxx,

Matthew Brown,
It would be a disaster to lose this wonderful example of Mediterranean Revival architecture, with its beautiful iron balconies and glazed roof tiles. It is also a cultural treasure because of its history and its interesting mix of residents.

Julia Greenwood,
I know too many people who live in the Wilmont. I lived there once. Most of my friends have lived there once. It may be old and need some work, but that's the character and I guarantee you it's safe. Stop trying to take away our community and destroying the character of this city.

Bryan Morton,
This building has character to a city that is too quickly become a cookie-cutter erector set.

Sarah Kahn,

Mary E. Ellis,

Jennifer Weber,
I don't live in Raleigh but cannot let these people lose their home. Hope I can help you all out!

Kevin McBee,

Chris D.,

Joshua Thomas Lewis,
Sorry.

Will Butler,

Meg,
I remember the first time I drove by The Wilmont, in the early 90s. My first thought was, "I have to live there!" A few months later, I was moving out of my parents house for the first time, moving in with roommates. nine months later, I signed my first lease on another apartment there.
This building is a real treasure. There's no denying it needs to be fixed up. But do not knock it down! This means so much more to the city than just punk rock college housing. This is a part of Raleigh's history.

I have had more good times there than I could recount offhand, it would be an absolute shame to have everyone kicked out. Buildings like the Wilmont should be kept as a part of local history, if anything. I am getting increasingly tired seeing apartment buildings that all look the same, and evicting the residents would only perpetuate such a cycle.

ed mckim,
i have lived in raleigh most of my life, and can't imagine hillsborough st without the wilmont

xxxxxxxx,
Lived there many years and had many a good time. My brother still resides there and may not have another place to go if it isn't saved.

xxxxxxxx,

Miller Taylor,
This building adds much needed life and vitality to the west end of Hillsborough street. I consider it a landmark. Fix it! There is no project greener than a renovation, especially when Raleigh is building new residential structures.

Doug Wheeler,
Save the Wilmont!

Charlotte Johnson,

Henry Shore,

ErinM,
I can't say I like the ceiling caving-in in the bathroom, but the prospect of moving out is unthinkable let alone deeply upsetting.

Ariel Greenwood,

xxxxxxxx,

Brandon Dunham,
rock on wilmont, rock on.

Jon Harrison,
I've lived in Raleigh since 1985 and for as long as I can remember, the Wilmont has always been an intriguing fixture to me. I'd hate to see it go. Maybe you could get a group of volunteers together to help get the place back in shape. Easier said then done though, I know.

lisa heusner,

Katie Watson,
wilmontamont 4ever!

Hannah Nissan,

Mary FitzGerald,
What a shame the people collecting rent did not maintain this historic building. Now so many good people will be displaced.

Nathan Shepard,
I've had several friends live in the building and I've shared in some really fond memorizes there. I hope the Wilmont will continue to exist in the future, Raleigh will sorely miss it.

Genevieve Stafford,

xxxxxxxx,

Emily Brink,

James Sellers,

xxxxxxxx,

Patrick Murphy,
I don't live there, but I know many who do and speak very fondly of it. To deny current and future residents the opportunity to live in and enjoy this beautiful and historic icon would be a shame.

Mark Menesses,

Katherine Mabe,
What happened to historic PRESERVATION?

Bronson Curry,
David House and VG Murray: Thank you for allowing a Hillsborough Street icon to deteriorate into a state "unsuitable for human habitation." Thank you for ignoring your tenants' repair requests for months, then making the most minimal repairs possible while doing nothing to address the source of the problem. Thank you for being oblivious to the fact that the building itself is an institution that has been part of local culture for decades and deserves better custodianship than you showed it. We were here for birthdays, for movie nights, for last goodbyes; for Halloween, Christmas, New Year's, St. Patrick's Day, and damn near every other day of the year. Where were you?

Morgan McCormick,
It is saying no small thing that the Wilmont is a fixture in the minds of Raleigh residents fortunate enough to witness its rustic visage and eye-catching porch decorations involving mannequins, grills and knickknacks so knickknacky as to make the building itself a work of art. I have been up and down Hillsborough St. more times in my life than I am ever likely to go up any other, and to subtract the Wilmont from the body of Hillsboroughian beauty is to subtract from the soul of Raleigh.
And beyond all my high falutin talk, people live here, and are apparently getting forced out an extra two weeks early. Are there problems with the Wilmont? God yes, no one's denying that. But to enter it into the public forum only to eject it two weeks later is unfair when considering that the Wilmont is, at its least, a priceless historical monument and at its most a place people go home to. You may have the right of the law to evict these people, but you do not have the best interests of its tenets in mind when you try to sweep them under the rugs they're still trying so hard to reupholster.

xxxxxxxx,

Laura Denery,
The Wilmont is a beautiful building and should be preserved. Save the Wilmont!!!

Jayne M. Goethe,

xxxxxxxx,

xxxxxxxx,

edouard bidanset,
fix her up... dont leave her to the city... in my opinion there is not a thing wrong with the building... if there is then learn something and fix it yourself... it might cost you a penny or two but you will learn how to fix things for others and when you yourself own a home... nothing i hate more than people who dont care about things because they are not of their own belongings...

Brian Dennis,

Ronald Nause,

ray coleman,

Garrett Warren,

Fairuz Noelle Saleh,
This is an institution with a long history, and it deserves to be preserved. Save the Wilmont!

laura floros,
I am disturbed that Raleigh may loose yet another historic dwelling in the name of pure indolence.

Ali Ziglar,

Holly Knapp,
I have so many incredible memories from my time spent at the Wilmont. It would be a real tragedy to simply give up on this amazing piece of Raleigh history.

Zachary Hobert Thompson,
Why do we have to tear down everything "old?"

xxxxxxxx,

Ashley Wilson,
Please don't take people out of their homes. This place obviously means a lot to them. It is such a beautiful place.

xxxxxxxx,

Katelyn Long,

Matt Holt,
This property id both a landmark known by all in the surrounding community and a beloved icon a place which is truly celebrated and loved by those who visit observe and inhabit its presence. It is truly a shame that the city of Raleigh in its infinite power and wisdom can not find a solution which can bring the building up to code and allow residents to remain at the Wilmont.

Meghan O\'Brien,

Catherine Early,

J M Hodges,

xxxxxxxx,

Kim E.,
It is completely unacceptable that the residents of the Wilmont building will be displaced from their homes with less than a month’s notice. Many of them are college students, who cannot afford to relocate that quickly. Deposits and higher rent are not at everyone’s fingertips and this should have been accounted for by all parties involved in this eviction process. The owner should pay for all of their moving expenses and extra fees associated with this hardship. If he had enough wealth to afford a 1.4 million dollar purchase, then he could afford the few dollars to get each resident settled in a new home. It shouldn’t have come to this.
This is a fabulous building. Even the roaches like it, I suspect. Hopefully, someone will step in to purchase and restore it so residents can continue to enjoy downtown living. This would benefit the city culturally and demonstrate that Raleigh is a mature and sophisticated place to live. If they knock it down and put up something brand new, then they are destroying the character, history behind this city. A city with no evidence of a past has no depth and why would anyone cool want to move there?

The Wilmont is Raleighs most iconic apartment building, and it would be a tradgedy to lose it!

I just moved into the Wilmont last summer, please don't take it away already! Despite everything I am entirely in love with this place.

Ivy Bynum,

Eric Shook,

Ben Quigley,

Robert Finck,
Great building in my favorite part of Raleigh. I would hate to see it go.

Jordan Sanchez,
I remember going to and from church or leisure activities downtown and passing the Wilmont as a child. There would always be something kinda breath taking about the building. And people would decorate their balconys with the coolest thing.

I'm glad to say that I have several friends int hat building and it's a great look that Hillsborough street has going for it.

Want to knock something down for new condos? Try the police department!

Tina Wilson,

Check with your state for a renter's advocacy agency, many states have them. Further, the landlord merely sent a letter, not an eviction notice. Eviction notices generally allow you to answer and request a court hearing. You can gain several weeks this way (depending on your state law). Also, contact any and every public official, congressman, councilman, mayor, govenor or other who you can make noise to. Make it a public issue. Make noise.

Caitlin Vincent,

Mark Linehan,

Hannah Pearce,
The Wilmont has been the host for some of the most memorable moments in my life over the past couple of years. It has been home to many of my friends, and boasts more character than most any apartment building in this fair city.

The Wilmont is a fixture of Hillsborough Street and a cultural landmark of many N.C. State students and alumni. Tearing it down would be a huge mistake!

Amanda Wood,

The Wilmot has not only been an apartment complex in Raleigh for years, it's become one of the many landmarks that we should do everything possible to hold onto. It has it's own eclectic charm and I don't want to lose the chance to live in such a unique place!

I don't live there but a friend does and this place is his home. He has no where else to live and does anyone wanna be held accountable for kicking people out when they are just going to knock it down, rebuild it, and move new people in? Rennovation, not replacement. Cheaper I believe.

I lived in the Wilmont around 1990-1991 when I was at NCSU School of Design. I even wrote a paper about the apartment, and used it as a film location for my graduation project. It's an unforgetable experience. The Wilmont is an irreplaceable landmark for the city of Raleigh. Save the Wilmont!!!

Chris Muller,
This grand old building is part of the urban fabric that make Hillsborough Street, and Raleigh as a whole, the special place that it is. Don't tear a huge hole in this fabric by demolishing such a special place, and don't force out the residents just because the owner's good faith progress isn't meeting an arbitrary timeline. West Raleigh is my home, and the Wilmont has been part of it since the very early development of the area. Extend a hand to the building, its owner, and its tenants, in friendship rather than with a closed fist.

Ashe,

There's MANY other properties within walking distance of the Wilmont that should be vacated first. Don't believe me? Check out 3414 Hillsborough St, now known as the Sigma Pi house. I used to live there--asbestos in the ceiling tiles, obsolete plumming, and an electrical tinderbox of wiring.. if Raleigh wants to shut down anyone on Hillsborough, know that 3414 makes the Wilmont look like a daycare center.

Anna Krzywinski,

I have so many fond memories of the wilmont, just a beautiful place to live, i learned about falling in and out of love, the importance of good neighbors and friends, how to keep all the windows open even in the winter, and got buns of steel from walking up all of those stairs. the place never had a dull moment, i remember driving by once when i was a kid and my mom screaming "theres an orangatan on that balcony!!" from that moment even as a kid i knew i had to live there.

While I believe in dealing with an owner's neglect, destroying the Wilmont will not help this. We need action from the city to help keep prices affordable for this building while finding an owner that will help restore the building into finer shape. This goal may seem lofty, but I think tearing down the Wilmont would be a blow to what's left of the area's more...laid back aesthetic.

The Wilmont is a Raleigh Institution. A fabulous example of Mediterranean Revival architecture and a local cutural treasure, the Wilmont represents the very thing that Raleigh says it is trying to maintain with the downtown revival. The Wilmont was my very first real apartment, and I love every inch of that beautiful brick building, which is just as much a Raleigh landmark as anything downtown, on NC State Campus or in Oakwood. Well, I lived at the Wilmont in apartment C-4 from 1998 to 2000. The people there were cool and the building was cool. It was close to school, so that was a big plus. The thing is that the building is quite old and the (not so) superintendent (Rick) at the time was a JOKE. When I looked at the apartment prior to signing the lease, the bathroom ceiling was shot because the tub above leaked. Instead of fixing the plumbing, they got Rick to install an acoustic ceiling. This was VG Murray. I don't know how long they controlled the property, but they really let it go to shit. Don't get me wrong--the place is really cool and I mostly liked living there. It is an old building that is worth 1.4 mil, but it would probably take 4 mil to get it to code. A private investor would not do that, and the city would sure as hell not do that. I love the Wilmont, but at the same time I really don't know what will become of it because it has been neglected for so long and the renovations (40k is a drop in the bucket) will really pile up. Maybe if it were bought by one the historical society and turned into offices it could stand a chance--or even gutted and turned into condos, because the floorplans are really generous. Good luck to all of you!

Izzy Burger,
Tearing the Wilmont down would be a horrible mistake on the part of the city.
Raleigh is certainly not known for its 'bohemian charm' and the Wilmont was one of the few havens for the artists and counter culture of the Oak city. To destroy this building would be to send a clear signal to a big portion of the population that they are not wanted as an active part of the community.
Has someone on the board of the City Council been made aware of the number of events - live music, bike races, fundraisers, cookouts, and other PRO CITY functions have been held there? Many of Raleigh's successful PROFESSIONAL musicians, writers, and artists have strong ties to the building. Certainly the Raleigh government realizes that it is GOOD to have happy voters. It is GOOD when your community can come together in a fun, amiable atmosphere. It is GOOD for people to feel free to express themselves.
Certainly, Raleigh has no desire to become the next "liberal" speakeasy of the south - we can leave that to Carrboro - But the city needs its youth and artists and is tiptoeing the line of becoming a cultural wasteland of apartment chains and cookie-cutter buildings. These people who live in the Wilmont and, of course, the building itself, give Raleigh a sense of flair, of joie de vive, of PERSONALITY. It's past and present tenants have made an immeasurable contribution to the city's economy and their absence would certainly be felt by this already cash-strapped government.
I, myself, know several (ex) Wilmont tenants who do not want to live anywhere else in the city. Many are moving to Chapel Hill, Durham, et., and TAKING THEIR TAX DOLLARS WITH THEM. Now, I'm no politician, but I think we're trying to keep all of that we can, right?
I and many others would be deeply saddened by the loss of the Wilmont. It would be a tragedy historically and an economic suicide for southwest Raleigh.
If the city wants to kick out it's artists and thinkers then it should continue to do exactly as it's doing. Pretty soon there won't be any of us left.
